Marin General Hospital currently has an opportunity for a Certified Coder II

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Coders will provide data for the hospital?s inpatient, outpatient, emergency care and ancillary Coding/DRG information systems. Certified coders performing the Coding/DRG assignments must accurately examine and evaluate the health information contained in the medical record for coding purposes.? Certified coders perform hospital coding and abstracting of patient care documents within the required timeframes. Certified coders assist with tracking and monitoring revenue reports to ensure all inpatient discharges and patient care encounters are coded on a daily basis.? Certified coders demonstrate the analytical ability to participate in troubleshooting of challenging accounts utilizing their expertise and experience.


High school diploma or GED required.


Level II requires a minimum of three year related coding experience in an acute care facility. Hospital setting preferred.


Demonstrated knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, statistics and computer skills required.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with all levels of hospital and support personnel.

Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing, stay organized, work effectively with intricate and detailed subject matter, use good deductive reasoning, shift priorities smoothly, and act independently within established guidelines.

Excellent clerical and general office skills.

Demonstrated tact and diplomacy.


Coding certification: RHIT or RHIA or CCS required.


ESSENTIAL?(not modifiable)

Performs Hospital Inpatient, Outpatient Surgery, Emergency Room, and Laboratory-Radiology Ancillary Coding.

Codes diagnoses, operations, and non-operative procedures utilizing the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems.

Applies accurate, complete and consistent coding practices for the production of high quality healthcare data.? Selection/sequencing of principal and secondary diagnosis done correctly at least 98% of the time.

Abstracts designated statistical data from patient record and enters the information into the abstract database.? Abstracts all appropriate data at least 97% of the time.

Utilizes various current codebooks and procedural manuals.

Meets minimum standard productivity requirements as outlined in coding productivity policy.

Writes completed record to appropriate queue at least 100% of the time, or reassigns to other group work queues if required.

Maintains coding continuing education credits.

Level II Certified Coder performs at a higher level and quality of productivity parameters (as specified by Director)

Performs other duties as required or assigned.


Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
